After 21 days and multiple votes on the Floor, the House of Representatives has elected Rep. Mike Johnson as the 56th Speaker of the House. Rep. Johnson received 220 votes while Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries received 209.
Speaker Johnson has indicated his intent to get the House back to work expeditiously with an immediate focus on considering the FY 2024 Appropriations bills in the House and passing a Continuing Resolution to avoid a government shutdown when the current CR expires on November 17th. He also has stated his desire to pass a resolution condemning Hamas, negotiate final versions of the NDAA and the FAA, and pass a Farm bill.
We will provide more detail on the legislative schedule and staffing decisions within the Speaker’s office shortly.
