The membership of the House Republican Steering Committee for the 119th Congress is finalized now that the leadership elections have concluded and regional representatives have been selected. The Speaker announced that the reconstituted Steering Committee will meet on December 9 and 12 to interview and elect committee chairs for the 119th Congress.
In addition to the uncontested Chairs, the Steering Committee will fill vacant Chair positions for the following Committees:
- Education and the Workforce
- Energy and Commerce
- Financial Services
- Foreign Affairs
- Science, Space, and Technology
- Transportation and Infrastructure
The Steering Committee will then turn its attention to filling the “A Committees,” but timing for committee assignments is fluid and may slip into the New Year. Finally, the Steering Committee will populate the remaining Committee slots and provide Committee assignments for the Freshmen Members in mid- to late-January.
Vacant Chair Positions
Education and the Workforce
Chairwoman Virginia Foxx has completed her term as Chair and will not seek an additional waiver to continue in that capacity in the 119th Congress. The following Members are running to succeed Dr. Foxx as Chair:
- Rep. Tim Walberg (MI-5)
- Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-4)
Energy and Commerce
Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers is retiring from Congress after only four years as the Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee. The following Members are running to succeed Chairwoman Rodgers:
- Rep. Brett Guthrie (KY-2)
- Rep. Bob Latta (OH-5)
Financial Services
Chairman Patrick McHenry is retiring from Congress after six years as the senior Republican on the Financial Services Committee. His announced departure from Congress has resulted in a spirited four-way race to determine the next chairman of the Committee. The following Members are running to succeed Chairman McHenry:
- Rep. Andy Barr (KY-6)
- Rep. French Hill (AR-2)
- Rep. Bill Huizenga (MI-4)
- Rep. Frank Lucas (OK-3)
Foreign Affairs
Chairman Mike McCaul has completed his three-term tenure as the top Republican on the Foreign Affairs Committee. He is no longer seeking a waiver from the Steering Committee to continue his service as Chair. The following Members are seeking to Chair the Committee in the 119th Congress:
- Rep. Ann Wagner (MO-2)
- Rep. Brian Mast (FL-21)
- Rep. Darrell Issa (CA-48)
- Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-2)
Rules
Chairman Michael Burgess is retiring from Congress. The Rules Committee Chairman is appointed by the Speaker and the appointment is not subject to a vote in the Steering Committee. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler was expected to be a leading candidate to Chair the Committee—however, Virginia Foxx has recently expressed an interest in chairing the Rules Committee in the 119th Congress.
Science, Space, and Technology
Chairman Frank Lucas is term-limited as the Chairman of the Science Committee and Brian Babin (TX-36) will likely succeed Lucas as the Chair of the Committee during the 119th Congress.
Transportation and Infrastructure
Chairman Sam Graves is term-limited as the Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, but he is seeking a waiver from the Steering Committee to continue his service in the 119th Congress.
